Minutes of the September meeting

Many typographical errors were pointed out. With those emendations, the minutes were approved.

Treasurer’s Report – Dale Hayes – attached to these minutes

The meeting’s finances continue to track the budget.

The report was approved.

Ministry & Counsel – Roger Schroeder

Bookmark idea. The suggestion that the meeting adopt a bookmark containing all our relevant numbers and times was discussed. It was decided that the present materials we have available to visitors and new attenders are sufficient.

Expanded Sunday activities. Ministry and Counsel reported discussions on an idea forwarded by Violetta Trabandiene concerning expanding our Sunday worship activities beyond what we now have. Ministry and Counsel desired the opinions and suggestions of the meeting at large;, specifically, whether we feel the need for such an increase in activity and how often we would like to do it. Several suggestions were made. Some friends felt that the meeting might be getting overly programmed. The idea of friends of like mind adjourning to the General Denver for lunch after meeting was brought up again. Richard Coleman will speak to the General Denver about reserving a table for us. The meeting agreed that we wish to retain fellowship breakfast and hymn singing on the usual Sundays. The expanded activities would be contemplated for the intervening Sundays, with announcement of the activity at previous meeting for worship.

The meeting directed Ministry and Counsel to maintain watchful care of developing plans for expanded Sunday activities.

Appeal from Lucy Steinitz. Ministry and Counsel reported on an appeal brought to the meeting by Canby Jones on behalf of Lucy Steintiz, an alumna of Wilmington College who has been working for years in Namibia. The appeal cogently and succinctly delineates the catastrophic impact the AIDS epidemic is having on the social and economic institutions in Africa and contains a call for action by Quakers everywhere. Ministry and Counsel recommends taking the following steps:

The meeting approved both suggestions and directed Ministry and Counsel to draft the documents for approval by meeting for business.

Memorial minute for Phil Holmes. A draft memorial minute for Phil Holmes was presented. The meeting suggested that the passage concerning Phil’s trial and subsequent imprisonment be rewritten.

Health of members was reviewed

Inner Search will continue reading the writings of Hildegard of Bingen.

Ministry and Counsel will meet again at 9:30 am in Canby Jones’ apartment on Tuesday, Nov 14.

The report was approved.

Old Business

Meeting to host Youth Traveling Bible Study

The meeting hosted this ministry of Wilmington Yearly Meeting on Oct 15. A meal was provided and Patricia Thomas spoke on unprogrammed worship. The meeting was a success. We can anticipate being asked to do this again next year.

New Business

Nominating Committee. Roger Schroeder reported for the committee. The report is attached. All friends presently serving have agreed to continue. Essentially, the only change is that Ruth Stuckey has agreed to fill the vacancy on Ministry and Counsel created by the death of Phil Holmes.

The meeting approved the work of the nominating committee and expressed its gratitude for the service of members

Midweek meeting for worship. The midweek meeting for worship held last month for Ron Rembert’s student was successful. Ron asked if the meeting would be willing to hold another for another student that was unable to attend the first one. The meeting was agreeable. Ron will look further into it.

Outreach at Clinton County Youth Center. Lenna Mae Gara reported being contacted by Donna Thorpe about the meeting taking responsibility for supplying snacks at the Clinton County Youth Center for one week some time in the future. As almost thirty kids are involved, this is a not inconsiderable job and it is at an inconvenient time for most friends. Lenna Mae is willing to participate, but would need help. Friends recognize the need, but it is doubtful that this is something we can commit to taking on. Interested friends can contact Lenna Mae for further information.

Participation at Your Father’s Kitchen. Friends are reminded that the meeting will serve lunch at Your Father’s Kitchen on December 2. Linda Sears brought a request from her granddaughter’s Girl Scout troop to help. The meeting approved incorporating the girls in our ministry at Your Father’s Kitchen

State of the Society reports. Roger Schroeder reported that he has received instructions from Wilmington Yearly Meeting regarding submission of the annual State of the Society report. The meeting referred the matter to Ministry and Counsel and directed them to produce a draft in a timely manner.

The meeting concluded with a period of silent worship.

Campus Friends Meeting is a meeting of the Religious Society of Friends, often called Quakers. Campus Friends Meeting meets every Sunday at 10:30 am in the Quaker Heritage Meetinghouse on the campus of Wilmington College. Campus Friends Meetings for worship follow the unprogrammed tradition. We have no pastor and no order of service. Friends gather in worhshipful silence waiting upon the leadings of the Spirit. Campus Friends Meeting welcomes all who wish to worship with us.
