Friends gathered with a time of centering and a query from WYM Queries.

Minutes of the August meeting

The minutes were approved with two minor corrections.

Treasurer’s Report – Dale Hayes – attached to these minutes

So far, we are running ahead of projections. Optimism must be tempered by the fact that we are only two months into the new fiscal year.

The report was approved.

Ministry & Counsel – Patricia Thomas

Roger Schroeder’s physical problems have not abated and he has indicated that he is ready to take up the meeting’s offer of a circle of care. Roger has no insurance. Ministry and Counsel is asking the meeting to consider some way to allay his medical expenses. Several possibilities were discussed. Richard Coleman will talk to Roger about catastrophic insurance. The meeting could help out with the premiums. Dale Hayes stated that any such expenditure could be accommodated in the “sufferings” line of the budget.

Canby Jones is laying down his work on Ministry and Counsel. The meeting expressed its deep appreciation for the wisdom of Canby’s counsel over his long years of service.

Health of members was reviewed.

The report was approved.

A more detailed schedule will be forthcoming.

The meeting approved the preliminary plan and directed that planning continue.

OVYM proposed statement on corporal punishment
The meeting considered a draft statement by Richard Mitchell that is being circulated among the monthly meetings in OVYM. A number of points were raised, mainly regarding the intended audience. The statement is very broad and makes some assertions that are not supported by references. Lenna Mae Gara will contact Mitchell to ask for clarification on our questions.

Minute of Appreciation to Saint Anthony’s
Canby Jones drafted a minute expressing our appreciation for the years of easy and pleasant cooperation with the congregation of Saint Anthony’s Episcopal Church during the time we shared the same facilities in the Kelly Center and thanking them for their generous gift to Campus Friends on the laying down of their church. Canby was able to read the minute at the last service conducted in Saint Anthony’s. The minute was well-received. It is attached to these minutes.

Chris Swisshelm’s memorial minute
The minute was drafted by Richard Coleman and approved by Ministry and Counsel. Richard read the minute at Chris’s memorial meeting. It is attached to these minutes.

New Business

Report of the Nominating Committee
The report was received and approved by the meeting. The new slate is much the same as the old slate. A full roster is attached to these minutes.

Minutes archive
Lenna Mae Gara is getting the minutes archive in the Wilson Library Quaker Collection up to date. She asked if we want to keep minutes from the pre-computer era, many of which were produced on equipment and with materials that very susceptible to aging. Any friends with materials that should be archived are asked to get them to Lenna Mae.

OVYM Executive Committee agenda
Input was solicited by the clerk. None was brought forward.

Epistle from the WYM Ministry and Counsel Clerk
The epistle summarizes the State of Society reports from the various monthly meetings. Patricia will read it in meeting for worship.

The meeting concluded with a period of silent worship.

Campus Friends Meeting is a meeting of the Religious Society of Friends, often called Quakers. Campus Friends Meeting meets every Sunday at 10:30 am in the Quaker Heritage Meetinghouse on the campus of Wilmington College. Campus Friends Meetings for worship follow the unprogrammed tradition. We have no pastor and no order of service. Friends gather in worhshipful silence waiting upon the leadings of the Spirit. Campus Friends Meeting welcomes all who wish to worship with us.
