Friends gathered with a time of centering and a query from WYM Queries.

Minutes of the June meeting

were approved.

Treasurer’s Report – Patricia Thomas reporting for Dale Hayes – attached to these minutes

Our year-end appeal for funds was successful. We ended the fiscal year with only a slight deficit. While deficit spending continues to be a concern, we can still meet all our discretionary giving goals with only a small impact on our reserves.

The report was approved and the meeting directed the treasurer to pay all the discretionary contributions as planned.

Ministry & Counsel – Patricia Thomas

Distant Friends The only distant friend that has not been contacted so far is Kelly Snyder. Patricia will try again. Action will be taken in the August meeting to adjust our rolls in accordance with the results of our outreach effort

Fifth Sunday program Ron Rembert and Linda Sears have accepted for the July fifth Sunday. Ruth Stuckey was asked if she and Roy Joe would speak at the September fifth Sunday and she tentatively agreed.

Memorial Meeting and Minute for Chris Swisshelm Patricia agreed to contact Vicky Powers and her daughters to ascertain their wishes with respect to a memorial meeting for Chris. If they decline, we will visit the question of whether the meeting wishes to proceed on our own. Patricia will also ask Richard Coleman to draft a memorial minute for Chris.

Health of Members was reviewed.

State of the Worship It has been noted that a number of recent meetings have been completely silent. However, it is the sense of Ministry and Counsel that the silence has been deep and gathered and that there is no impediment to spoken ministry. Meeting for Worship continues to be well-attended. Ruth Stuckey agreed to read a query on vocal ministry in Meeting for Worship.

The report was approved.

Old Business

Fall Retreat Patricia has reserved Quaker Knoll for Oct 26-28 for our fall retreat. The theme for Wilmington Yearly Meeting for the next year is “Do you wish to be made whole?” It was suggested that this might also serve for the theme of the retreat. The next step is to solicit membership for the Retreat Committee. Any friends wishing to serve are invited to make themselves known to the Clerk.

New Business

Official representative to Ohio Valley Yearly Meeting Dale Hayes has agreed to serve and was approved by the meeting.

T. Canby Jones Quaker Heritage Meetinghouse Wilmington College has decided to honor Canby Jones by adding his name to the official designation of the meetinghouse. Campus Friends Meeting has been invited to participate in the planning of the dedication ceremony, which will occur on Oct 19. Ron Rembert accepted the charge to serve on the committee.

Nominating Committee It is time once again to consider our dispostitions for the coming year. After some discussion, the meeting decided to ask Terry Miller and Ruth Stuckey to serve as the nominating committee, with Jim Ramsey as first alternate. Lenna Mae Gara agreed to make the calls.

Reflections on Wilmington Yearly Meeting sessions Friends who attended were gratified by the level of participation and the way the “living stones” theme was carried out. Patricia reported on the reception of the revised Faith and Practice. The process stirred a number of meetings to suggest changes to Faith and Practice which go well beyond the mandate of the present task force. These issues include same gender marriage and outward sacraments. The plan going forward is to incorporate the edits within the task force purview received from the monthly meetings and present a draft to mini-yearly meeting. The intention is to proceed expeditiously with publication of a revised document we can all agree on before engaging one another on these more contentious issues.

Proposed Budget for Fiscal Year 2008 Patricia Thomas and Richard Coleman presented a proposed budget for the coming year as drawn up by Dale Hayes. The budget is very similar to last year’s with two important differences.

First, the obligations and assessments to WYM, OVYM, and FUM have been refigured based our actual membership (28) as opposed to our membership of record (36). Second, the assessment for FUM has also been refigured to move the amount earmarked for discretionary giving to our discretionary contributions category, as was done in 2007.

The meeting then proceeded to revisit the question of discretionary giving, which first surfaced in the May meeting for business. There were two issues that concerned friends. The first was that much of our discretionary giving is duplicated by discretionary giving by the yearly meetings out of our assessments. The second is the feeling among friends that more of our meager ability to give should be directed toward organizations that affect us locally or with which we feel a close affinity. After thorough discussion, the meeting decided to make the following changes in the 2008 budget under Category D: Discretionary Contributions:

1. Zero out the FUM line

2. Add/increase the following lines to the indicated amounts:

• Peace Resource Center                                     $200
• Earlham School of Religion                             150
• Friends Association of Higher Education     150
• Quaker Knoll Camp                                           200
• Right Sharing                                                       150

These changes are not reflected in the attached document. A revised budget will be included in the August minutes.

The meeting concluded with a period of silent worship.
