Treasurer’s ReportDale Hayes

Quarterly contributions are scheduled to be paid in December. Contributions are running a little behind projections. Since this is the season for giving, the meeting would be grateful for any end-of-year giving friends might be disposed to make.

The report was approved.

Ministry & Counsel – Did not meet in October.

Old Business

Meetinghouse maintenance. Patricia Thomas reported that not all of the problems have as yet been solved. Friends are advised to dress warmly for meeting for worship.

OVYM Minute on Corporal Punishment. Lenna Mae Gara followed up on our request for clarification to Richard Mitchell of the OVYM Peace and Social Concerns committee. From Friend Mitchell’s reply, it is clear that the circulated draft was a straw man meant to spark off discussions among friends to gain clearness on our own position on the issue before proceeding further. There was no intent in the draft to seek legislation or to propose alternative methods of discipline.

The committee obviously views this process as just entering the very early stages. Friend Mitchell’s recommendation is that meetings “focus on the use of corporal punishment by Friends. If we can find unity on Friends’ own use of corporal punishment, we could subsequently consider our view on its use in schools and elsewhere.”

The meeting then proceeded to a discussion of whether we feel led to take up this matter, especially considering our position as a bridge meeting and the fate of a similar minute in Wilmington Yearly Meeting a year ago. The sense of the meeting was that it made no sense to take a position on corporal punishment in schools unless we were clear on the use of corporal punishment in our own families.

The meeting decided to address this question in a threshing meeting structured like our old Spiritual Journeys program. Accordingly we will meet on Tuesday evening, Jan 29 2008, at the home of Dale Hayes and Terry Miller. Potluck supper will commence at 5:30 with worship sharing to begin at 7:00. We will wrap it up no later that 9:00 pm.

The topic will be revisited in the February meeting for business.

Kelly Snyder’s membership. Kelly has expressed a desire to maintain her membership and was accordingly reinstated.

New Business

Spring Retreat. Friends’ enthusiasm for the last two retreats has resulted in an expressed wish for another retreat in the spring. The meeting agreed to commence planning for a retreat to be held at Quaker Knoll the weekend of 18-20 April 2008. Patricia Thomas will contact the Quaker Knoll folks and reserve the campground for our use that weekend. A planning committee will be formed at the January meeting for business.

Yearly Meeting Planning. ♠Patricia Thomas reported on behalf of the WYM Program Committee that there is a need for someone to provide an evening meal on Saturday, July 26 during the 2008 gathering of Wilmington Yearly Meeting. The meeting decided to take on that project. Patricia will coordinate with the program committee and report back to meeting for business.

The meeting concluded with a period of silent worship.

Campus Friends Meeting is a meeting of the Religious Society of Friends, often called Quakers. Campus Friends Meeting meets every Sunday at 10:30 am in the Quaker Heritage Meetinghouse on the campus of Wilmington College. Campus Friends Meetings for worship follow the unprogrammed tradition. We have no pastor and no order of service. Friends gather in worhshipful silence waiting upon the leadings of the Spirit. Campus Friends Meeting welcomes all who wish to worship with us.
