Friends gathered with a time of centering and a query from WYM that is to be the theme of t he State of Society Report, “How does your meeting use your “living stones” to build a spiritual house? How is your meeting vibrant with life?” (Reference: I Peter 2:4-5)
Minutes of the November Meeting were
approved with the following correction:
Page 2, paragraph 3 is amended to read “$1746” instead of “$1736.”
Treasurer’s Report – Dale Hayes – attached to these minutes
Patricia Thomas reported in Dale’s absence.
There was an error in the 2007 budget. The Wilmington Yearly Meeting (WYM) assessment should by $2605 instead of $2570. This increase is balanced by increasing the Contribution Meeting Support line to $7986. This change will be reflected in next month’s budget report.
The report was
approved.
Ministry & Counsel – Roger Schroeder
Bob Powell reported in Roger’s absence.
The final draft of Phil Holmes’s memorial minute is still pending.
Bob Powell will draft a letter forwarding Lucy Steinitz’s African AIDS appeal to the two yearly meetings.
Discussion of the new draft of the WYM minute on sexual harassment was tabled until Roger can be with us.
The process for preparing the State of Society Report was agreed and reconfirmed. See the November minutes for a summary of the plan.
A report on the progress of our plan to extend our Sunday meeting activities was tabled pending Roger’s return.
Patricia Thomas gave the committee a courtesy report on the planning for the meeting retreat. See under “New Business.”
Bob Powell brought forward a draft letter to distant friends, as directed by meeting for business, asking whether they wished to continue on our rolls. There was much discussion on the tone and thrust of the letter. Although the proximal cause of the letter was concern over yearly meeting assessments, it was decided, after consulting the faith and practice documents of both yearly meetings, that we should couch the letter in terms of pastoral outreach. Dale Hayes will bring a revised draft to our next meeting.
The committee discussed the issue of Carol Swisshelm’s membership status and the pastoral obligations of the meeting in that matter. Patricia Thomas will meet with Carol.
Health of members was reviewed. Kate Lynn has moved to Chicago to be with her mother, who appears to be in the final stage of her cancer. Richard Coleman is off painkillers and is rehabbing into his prosthesis.
Ministry and Counsel will meet next on 16 Jan at 9:30 am in Canby’s apartment.
The report was
approved.
Old BusinessThere was no old business.
New BusinessMeeting Retreat. Patricia Thomas reported for the Retreat Committee. Planning is well underway. At this point the main issue is the date. The date chosen by meeting for business is not available. The only other winter date is 26-28 Jan. The next available dates are in April. After some discussion, the meeting approved the weekend of 20-22 Apr for the retreat.
Quaker Knoll Camp does not charge a fee for providing the venue, although donations will be greatly appreciated.
All of the activities are being planned to be “stand alone;” that is, friends can pick and choose which sessions to participate in as their schedules and interests permit. Overnight accommodations will be available for those who wish to stay at Quaker Knoll Friday and Saturday nights.
The committee proposed the theme “Is God Green?” This is the title of a recent Bill Moyers PBS special about attitudes of religious organizations, especially evangelicals, toward stewardship of the environment. Stephen Potthoff has obtained a DVD of the program, which will serve as the framework of the retreat.
The outline of the proposed schedule is as follows:
- Friday evening: Story-telling and sharing of our experience of nature. Singing. Worship.
- Saturday: Breakfast. Moyers DVD and discussion. Lunch. Nature walk with Jim Ramsey. Supper. Sharing: everyone contributes a song , story, dance, art work, craft, etc.
- Sunday: Breakfast. Worship sharing: “What does it mean to me to walk gently on the Earth?” Meeting for worship at the regular time. Clean up and depart.
The meeting
approved the report and
directed that the committee continue planning along these lines.
Outlawed     The Ohio Valley Yearly Meeting Peace and Social Concerns Committee has sent the meeting a DVD containing a World Council of Churches documentary by this title. The documentary covers the Bush administration’s use of unlawful detention, torture, and “extraordinary rendition” in pursuit of its goals in the “global war on terror.” After some discussion, it was proposed that the DVD should be made available to all members and attenders and that the DVD be shown at our next Fellowship Breakfast, 7 Jan 07. The meeting
approved this proposal.
The meeting concluded with a period of silent worship.

approved amending the budget to accommodate the increase. Specifically, the OVYM line is to $1736 and that additional expense is to be offset by increasing the Contribution Meeting Support line to $436.
