Friends gathered with a time of centering and a query from WYM Queries.

Minutes of the July meeting

It was noted that the date of the meeting for business was for the July meeting instead of the August meeting. Otherwise, the minutes were approved.

Treasurer’s Report – Dale Hayes – attached to these minutes

We are only three weeks into the new fiscal year. Thus, there was very little activity in any of the accounts. The report was approved.

Ministry & Counsel – Roger Schroeder

Spiritual Journeys will meet on Sep 12 at the home of Summer Mc Brayer. Since so few friends were able to attend the August sessions, we have decided to repeat the same query in the same format. We will meet at 7:00. Friends will bring dessert to share. Worship-sharing will begin at 7:30. Query: Do we live in awareness of what needs to be done? (Oh my God! I forgot!). It is hoped that the new time and format will make it possible for more friends to attend.

It is time to decide whether we want to renew Spiritual Journeys for another three months. At the suggestion of meeting for business, Ministry and Counsel will poll friends after meeting for worship and report back to meeting for business in September.

Since out last meeting, we have received the sad news of Phil Holmes' death. Patricia has been in touch with the family and preliminary plans for Phil's memorial meeting have been made. The memorial meeting will take place in the Quaker Heritage Center meetinghouse at 2:00 pm on Saturday, September 9. We expect Phil's whole family to attend. Patricia will act as clerk of the memorial committee.

Richard Coleman continues to recover from his amputation. He is scheduled to be fitted with a prosthesis on Aug 28.

Canby Jones has received a call to give two endowed lectures at Union College in Kentucky on November 6 and 7. The way has opened for Canby to do this through the agency of two friends who have agreed to drive him down and back.

Ministry and Counsel have taken up the charge laid by meeting for business to survey junior and non-resident friends to verify whether they wish to remain on our membership. Bob Powell is drafting a letter to be sent to applicable members.

Inner Search is continuing to explore the writings of Meister Eckhardt.

Ministry and Counsel will meet again at 9:30 am in Canby Jones’ apartment on Tuesday, Sep 19.

The report was approved.

Old Business

The long-awaited bulletin board has arrived. Ruth hopes to have it up by the start of the semester.

New Business

Nominating Committee

Roger, Terry and Ron have agreed to serve again. Friends approved.

Updated Roster

Dale Hayes presented a draft update of the roster. Friends approved. Dale will make copies and distribute them to members.

Time for Meeting for Business

A request was made to change the time for meeting for business to 7:00 pm vice 7:30 pm to accommodate Ron Rembert's schedule. Friends approved.

Meeting to host Youth Traveling Bible Study

We have received a request from Heidi Friend, Youth Minister for Wilmington Yearly Meeting, to host Youth Traveling Bible Study on Sep 17. We would be responsible for serving a light supper in Kelly. The Bible study program would be conducted by Heidi in the Quaker Heritage Center meetinghouse afterward. Friends agreed that this would be a worthwhile activity in order to intoduce these young people to the Quaker Heritage Center and the new meetinghouse. Unfortunately, Sep 17 is not a convenient date for several friends. The meeting approved volunteering to host the Oct 15 meeting.

Appeal on behalf of Dan Kasztelan and Michel Clement

We have received an appeal from Wilmington Yearly Meeting on behalf of Dan and Michel, pastors of Cincinnati Friends Meeting. Dan and Michel are in dire financial straits owing to enormous medical bills not covered by insurance. The WYM letter is attached to these minutes.

Several monthly meetings are holding fund-raising events to help out. Cuba MM has held a series of breakfasts, and there will be an event at Quaker Knoll on Oct 1. Our small size limits the size of a fund-raiser we could take on and our present financial condition makes it impossible to make an outright gift, other than the $50 in the fund for sufferings line in our budget. Patricia offered to explore with Martha Sheldon the idea of a joint event on campus, possibly involving the Quaker Leader Scholars.

Pendle Hill meeting on peace and social concerns

There will be a convocation of persons from all over the country on peace and social concerns at Pendle Hill 8-10 September. Friends interested in attending should see Lenna Mae Gara for details.

OVYM draft minute on Lebanon ceasefire

Patricia has received a draft minute on a ceasefire in Lebanon from Ron Halderman, clerk of the OVYM Peace and Social Concerns Committee. She will post it on the bulletin board.

Clinton County Corn Festival

Volunteers and/or contributions are needed for the Quaker Disaster Relief ice cream booth and the Quaker Bakers.

Stewardship Brochure

WYM has produced an attractive and informative stewardship brochure. Friends may obtain copies from the Wilmington Yearly Meeting office in the Kelly Center.

Wilmington College Campus Minister

Patricia announced that she will be sharing these duties with Martha Sheldon this year in order to allow Martha to spend more time caring for her husband and family. Friends are urged to hold Martha and Bob and their children in the Light.

The meeting concluded with a period of silent worship.
